Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics

The Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics is a historical reenactment sporting event, established in 1955, with the aim of recalling the exploits and rivalry of the four Italian maritime republics: Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa and Venice.

The competition sees four rowing crews representing each of the republics compete against each other. This event takes place every year on a day between the end of May and the beginning of July, and is hosted by the aforementioned cities on a rotation basis. The regatta is preceded by a historical parade, during which some participants dressed up as ancient characters who characterized each republic parade through the streets of the organizing city.

On the occasion of the 70th Regatta, special ferry’s departures have been established:

👉🏻 Friday 16 May: departure from Amalfi at 00.15 for Minori – Cetara – Salerno.

This will be the day when, with the concert (10 pm), Amalfi will welcome the arrival in the city of the delegations from Genoa, Pisa and Venice.

👉🏻 Saturday 17th May, after the fireworks, departure from Amalfi at 00.15 for Minori – Cetara – Salerno.

This is certainly one of the most interesting days: at 5:45 pm, there will be the competition of the female crews, and, at the end of the awards ceremony, at 7:30 pm, the great Historical Procession of the Ancient Maritime Republics will start, parading on the State Road 163 “Amalfitana” (departure from Atrani and arrival, around 8:30 pm, at the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea in Amalfi, with entrance from Piazza Duomo).

The Procession will remember the splendor and glorious past of the four queens of the seas through a historical reenactment with over three hundred participants (really coming from the 4 cities).

The grand finale of Saturday will be the fireworks that will illuminate the bay of Amalfi at 11:45 pm.

  • Salerno Concordia – Amalfi: 09:40 – 10:40 – 13:10 – 14:10 – 15:30 – 17:10 – 18:10
  • Amalfi – Salerno Concordia: 09:00 – 10:35 – 11:20 – 14:10 – 16:15 – 17:45 – 19:10 – 20.40

It is the day of the official Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics. The start is scheduled for 12:30 pm, with the awards ceremony in Piazzale Flavio Gioia at 1:15 pm.
